Obituary of Robert J. Hilbert

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert James Hilbert Robert Hilbert passed away peacefully on May 4, 2015 at the Hospice Inn with family and friends at his side. Robert was born in Amityville on July 9, 1957 to Frances and James Hilbert. He is survived by his beloved Mother Frances, sisters Margaret and Mary, brothers Edward and Michael. He is also survived by nieces Allison, Jaisle, and Jamie; nephews Edward, James and Jake; and their children Robert, RJ, Ryleigh, Kellyanne, Liam, Juliette, James and Myles. He was predeceased by his father James and brother John. Robert attended University of Tampa but soon realized he wanted to continue the Hilbert family legacy of operating the Gilgo Beach Inn which was operated by his father James and his Uncle Joesph. It was a dream come true when the next generation of brothers purchased the Inn in 1985 from their mentors. Together with his brother Edward handling the customers at the counter and Robert the business operations and the grill, the Gilgo Beach Inn continued to be the friendly destination of choice for people to meet at the beach. Working at the Inn was considered a prized summer job providing a positive influence to the many lucky young first-time workers. Leading by example, the two generations of Hilbert brothers showed each employee how valuable a strong work ethic and pleasant customer interaction is to the success of a business. It made his day to see a customer with an older Gilgo logo tee shirt show up at the counter. Robert felt lucky to also call Gilgo his home. Evenings after work Robert would head out on his boat to breathe in the sea air. He felt lucky to live and work in such a beautiful environment. Robert was loved by many and will always be remembered for his kind heart, determination, and his willingness to help others. His smile brightened the life of anyone who met him. He dedicated over half his life as a sponsor unselfishly helping others through their most challenging times. Robert cherished the many strong and meaningful friendships he made over the years. His determination was evident in his desire to make the Inn a success and in his fight against cancer. Lovingly, Robert enjoyed his role as the favorite Uncle and Great Uncle. He will be truly missed by all. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 6, 2015, 2-4:30 and 7-9:30 PM at the Powell Funeral Home Inc., 67 Broadwqy (Rt. 110), , Amityville.
